Visions of Green

After decades of rapid economic growth, Asia's environment is at a tipping point. A Special Report on the scale of the crisis—and how to confront it

If you want a sense of the challenges facing Asia's physical environment, just go to Beijing—and breathe. The Chinese capital's constant swirl of production, construction and transportation creates a noxious smog that blankets the city on bad days, cutting both visibility and life expectancy. At the junior world track-and-field championships in Beijing this August, young runners choked and sputtered their way to lackluster performances, a bad omen for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Asia has a history of holding an Olympics in a city with foul air. Tokyo, site of the 1964 Summer Games, was so polluted in the '60s and early '70s that citizens walked the streets in surgical masks, while Japanese cities like Minamata, where thousands were stricken with severe neurological damage due to industrial mercury poisoning, became bywords for ecological catastrophe. Fast-industrializing Japan was commonly expected to become an environmental dystopia. But today, Tokyo is one of the world's cleanest megacities, with the view often clear all the way to Mount Fuji. Stricter laws, tougher enforcement and a hard-earned environmental consciousness have made Japan a nation whose record is something to which other Asians can aspire, rather than a misery to be deplored. "The Keyboard Kings"

Local Live — 水岡のぶゆき

Mizuoka Nobuyuki Group @

ラ・チッタデッラ 川崎

Wednesday, 4 October 2006

Yesterday M.N.G. performed their debut gig at the upper-scale, attractive La Cittadella theme mall in Kawasaki. It was really a successful concert that took place in a compact and cozy sunken amphitheater-type space occupied by a large number of seated guests as well as a small crowd that had gathered and stood to watch at the upper rim. The four M.N.G. members — Nobuyuki Mizuoka on his keyboard, Masaki Akiba on drums, Yuichi Murakami on electric bass, and singer Camaru — were in fine, energetic condition, obviously exhilarated by the fresh evening air as they impressively performed a various lineup of songs, including such Mizuoka classics as "Bonita," "Just As I Am," and "Tomorrow." The applause and compliments from the audience were varied and energetic also! After their lively musical performance was over, I excitedly told Murakami-kun that he was really "jammin'~!" He thought that I called him a ドイツ人〜 <笑>

Dear HK Fans and Wakin & Co.,

Once again I am very tardy in thanking you all so much for the great time we had at Wakin's double-header concerts in Hong Kong last month! As with the Taipei double headers, both shows were packed with energetic, high quality entertainment! Wakin sang a large volume of his classic Cantonese songs as well as plenty of his beloved Mandarin hits. He also sang in English his powerful, crystal-clear version of Elton John's “Your Song,” which I'd first heard him perform in Taipei at his O2 charity concert in 2002 — Man, Wakin is always really fine on that song. I wish he could record it!!

Wakin & Co. were so fired up that they sort of on purpose forgot about the official time-limit regulation for using the Hung Hom Coliseum — the concerts ran overtime on both nights, twice causing a hefty monetary fine to cut into their profit margin! For now, here are a few memorable scenes:

Hung Hom Coliseum packed to the rafters
Wakin has been practicing piano enough! 哈哈
Carefree in a canary yellow tee
Still love after all these years
Giving the stringfolks their due
A big thanks to Wakin and his merry musicians!

Another particularly special aspect of Wakin's 2006 concert tour has been the solo segments performed by Violinist Lee Chi, Pianist Hong Jingyao, and Bassist Guo Zongshao, who all have been key to Wakin's music for the major part of his career.

Among my other precious memories from the Hong Kong trip are:

  • Merlin's fine Japanese conversation ability and her excellent taste in Japanese music!
  • The great design of the tee shirt presented to us by the Wakin & Friends HK Fans Club!
  • Listening to my ultra-fave "新天長地久之男大當戀女大當愛  New Everlasting Love" while the whole HK fan club cheered "Hey! Hey! Hey!" as they waved their lightsticks in time with Wakin's speedy beat! He was able to sing that turbo-tune without a single missed lyric too!
  • Getting to see SGBY Yvonne again after a couple of years! And hearing her be the umpteenth person to mention at their introduction that my Japanese piano teacher has a very long name . . . . 哈哈哈
  • Getting to see TWBY Amber again after a couple of weeks! But then I was kind of sorry that Officer Cup-Cup and Uncle Chuan could not make the trip.....
  • Receiving a pretty bracelet from sweetie Angela! (I hear that there are three sweetie Angelas in the HK fan club~!)

Thank you very much to everyone! We hope you could be our guests in Japan someday! — A. Kurita
