Cate Blanchett to play Dylan in biopic
 NEW YORK (AFP) - Cate Blanchett will play Bob Dylan in his "androgenous phase" in a new biopic of the great poet-songwriter's life, it was announced, as Dylan turned 65. But even as he shows up everywhere in books, films and even a Broadway musical, Dylan, who has sought seclusion and mystery all his life, remains as enigmatic as ever. Dylan has clearly shrugged off retirement age, taking on a new job as a radio DJ, publishing a selection of his memoirs, musing in a Martin Scorcese documentary, authorizing a stage musical with his songs — and appearing in an advert for the Victoria's Secret lingerie store chain. And on Dylan's birthday, the Hollywood press reported that Blanchett would be among several actors — also including "Brokeback Mountain" star Heath Ledger and Richard Gere — to portray the great American folksinger in a film. Filmmakers show off their works at Cannes
Though international film festivals have proliferated over the years, the Cannes Film Festival, established in 1939 and this year running a dozen days from May 17 to May 28, remains the world's most prestigious. Two press conferences were held on opening night, one featuring the "The Da Vinci Code" director and actors, the other featuring members of this year's awards jury. Hong Kong film director Wong Kar-wai, who is president of the jury, and Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, the youngest judge, fielded most of the questions at the latter press conference. China Makes Artificial Rain for Beijing
BEIJING (AP) — Chinese weather specialists used chemicals to engineer Beijing's heaviest rainfall of the year, helping to relieve drought and rinse dust from China's capital, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Friday. Technicians with the Beijing Weather Modification Office fired seven rocket shells containing 163 cigarette-size sticks of silver iodide over the city's skies on Thursday, Xinhua said. [Continued]

【台北6日時事】健康志向を追い風に台湾で納豆がブームを呼んでいる。納豆の成分を含む健康食品が人気の中心だが、パック入り納豆も順調に売り上げを伸ばしており、新たに市場参入する地元企業も出てきた。
台北市内のショッピングセンター「微風広場」の食品売り場には日本から輸入した約40種類の納豆が並ぶ。3パック入りで80台湾ドル（約280円）〜 120台湾ドル（同420円）と日本に比べ3倍近くの値段だが、1日平均70個が売れていく。担当者は「おととしの秋から急に販売数が増えた。台湾は仏教徒の菜食主義者が多いのでまだ伸びる余地がある」と期待を込める。

Apple sets tune for pricing of
song downloads
 Apple Computer on Monday revealed it had renewed contracts with the four largest record companies — Universal, Warner Music, EMI and Sony BMG — to sell songs through its iTunes digital store at 99 cents each. The agreements came after months of bargaining, and they were a defeat for music companies that had been pushing for a variable pricing model. Since iTunes' launch three years ago, Apple has charged U.S. consumers 99 cents for each track — a uniform price that Steve Jobs, its chief executive, favors because of its simplicity for consumers. Edgar Bronfman, Warner's chief executive, and senior executives at EMI and Sony have in recent months supported variable pricing, which would allow them to charge more for new material from top artists. Universal has taken a more modest approach, suggesting that the market should be allowed to develop further before any adjustments are made. [Continued]
