水岡のぶゆき Mizuoka Nobuyuki concert in 亀戸 Kameido

10 OCTOBER 2005, TOKYO This Japanese holiday proved to be a great opportunity for a meeting of musical minds. Two renowned keyboardist colleagues of Emil Chau Wakin had come from Taiwan to Japan to attend the F1 Grand Prix Race at Suzuka Circuit on Sunday the 9th, and afterward they took the night train up to Tokyo to spend the rest of their vacation. On Monday afternoon, Max Tu Yin braved the rain and traveled over to Kameido in Koto-ku to watch a freebie outdoor mini-concert by keyboardist Nobuyuki Mizuoka. 水岡のぶゆき Mizuoka Nobuyuki concert in 亀戸 KameidoThough it was very fortunate that the stage and seating areas were sheltered so that the concert could go on, the roof over the benches happened to be an inflated plastic arch — and it resonated loudly with every drop of the downpour! Piano music played in the rain can be a lovely thing indeed, but waterdrops pounding on plastic are downright intrusive .... hee hee

Aside from that, by all accounts it was a splendid performance! Later on, a small dinner gathering took place at a sushi restaurant in Shinjuku, joined also by another top-tier keyboardist in Taiwan, Jay Hung Xinjie. 屠穎 Tu Yin at the 水岡のぶゆき Mizuoka Nobuyuki concert in 亀戸 Kameido Since music is the universal language (and so, apparently, is motorsports!), the fellows could communicate well on a wide range of topics, being fortunate also to have the kind support of Mrs. Sai for occasional translation. Among other things, the three piano pros discussed how Japan and Taiwan were coping with the current state of their music industries, and they chatted about differences in their freebie concert cultures, which have a lot to do with the availability of open public space. Max Tu Yin-san also commented that Mizuoka Nobuyuki-san's musicianship has qualities similar to his own, including the tendency to play the piano with his eyes closed: "In the studio I will do that," said Max, "but not at the concerts!" 屠穎 Tu Yin and 水岡のぶゆき Mizuoka Nobuyuki in a Shinjuku sushi restaurantPerhaps most heartwarming of all to hear were the enthusiastic expressions between these keyboard kings of their hope for cross-border collaborations in the future!

Our sincere thanks to everyone involved for the fantastic time and the precious memories! — A. Kurita, WWS

屠穎 Max Tu YinLife Sketches [屠穎・04/2005, EBTC Maestro Project] Melodies selected from neo-puppet dramas are reborn to become like classical or healing music as Tu Yin's skillful arrangements and sensitive hands guide the songs serenely among the scales. This album is likely to conjure images of taking a stroll in a lush, green forest, stopping to admire a misty waterfall framed by ferns.... Available for purchase online at Yesasia.com — 2nd album released in November 2005 (Click on the link at the bottom of this page to see the News Vault entry for that month) [ Audio Sample (.mp3)]

洪信傑 Jay Hong XinjieUntamable Dreamer [洪信傑・06/2005, EBTC Maestro Project] Hung Xinjie takes on traditional melodies of neo-puppet dramas with his keyboard and computer to deftly transform them into soft-jazz lounge music. The silky spunk of this album makes some of these tunes seem perfectly suited for adaptation into the next "James Bond" film! Available for purchase online at Yesasia.com [ Audio Sample (.mp3)]

水岡のぶゆき Nobuyuki Mizuoka TomorrowTomorrow [水岡 のぶゆき・07/2005, 630 (June-thirty)] In this debut solo release, eight of the original and eloquent instrumentals were composed by Nobuyuki Mizuoka, including Green Field and 月夜野 Tsukiyono, which he penned and played for the pop-jazz group jaja.
