 As the convoy of 18 SUVs pulls to a halt on the narrow road above Sanjiang, Wenchuan county, Sichuan, the gleeful shrieks of an excited crowd float upwards through the autumnal mist. Villagers have been lining the road to Sanjiang, awaiting the convoy's arrival, and now they slip and surge down muddy paths in the hope of getting closer to its head. A vehicle door finally swings open and Donatella Versace — of all people — shyly emerges from her sanctum of tinted windows and tobacco smoke. Standing in blonde tresses and heels, she is a fabulously incongruous sight here in the mountains. But the good villagers of Sichuan have no idea who she is. They are here, instead, to see her companion for the day — Li Lianjie, otherwise known as Jet Li. And when he appears before them, a great roar erupts.
The celebrity duo is visiting a school and counseling facility for children affected by the Sichuan earthquake, paid for by Versace and operated under the auspices of Li's charity, the One Foundation. "Before this country opened up, people were more focused on their spiritual lives," Li says. "Since this country opened we have been more focused on the material life. For the sake of Chinese culture, it's time for a balance." Established in April 2007, the One Foundation is Li's contribution toward that balance, and for its sake he has taken time out from films, becoming a full-time relief worker and traveling tirelessly on foundation business. Japan Reaches Out

When Kensuke Onishi decided to use his foreign university degree and fluent English to help internally displaced refugees in Kurdish Iraq, his Japanese mother's friends told her they understood if she wanted to weep.  After all, shouldn't a dutiful Japanese son return home and work for a big company, like the droves of salarymen before him? But in 1996, Onishi founded one of Japan's largest international NGOs, Peace Winds Japan, which operates everywhere from Sudan to East Timor. Today, the 41-year-old Osaka native has noticed that his countrymen no longer consider helping less fortunate foreigners a shameful occupation. Two former Peace Winds alumni now serve in the Diet, while Onishi recently has been fielding job queries from disillusioned investment bankers. "People in Japan live in such comfortable, peaceful conditions," says Onishi. "I think more Japanese are realizing that it's our duty to help out overseas and bring some of our values to the world."
Is the world turning Japanese? Even as Japan's domestic economy slips into recession and its politicians dither endlessly, the country's overseas influence is reaching new heights. Limited by a postwar constitution from developing military power, Japan's international clout relies on soft power, the term coined by Harvard professor Joseph S. Nye in 1990 to describe how countries "get what [they] want through attraction rather than coercion." Today, a generation of idealistic Japanese is attempting to sway the world through cultural, social and economic means. [Continued]

中国で「口パク」が処罰の対象に …
五輪などは別扱い
13日付中国新聞社電によると、中国文化部はこのほど、コンサートなど公演での「口パク」禁止を盛り込んだ、「営業性演出管理条例実施細則」の制定で、各界の意見を募集することを決めた。 中国では8月8日の北京五輪大会の開会式で、人気少女タレントの林妙可ちゃんの歌声が別人の声だったと分かり、批判の声が出た。
「口パク」禁止は国務院が7月22日に発表した「関于修改営業性演出管理条例的決定（営業性公演管理条例の修正に関する決定）」に盛り込まれている。「営業性演出管理条例」は全国を対象にする法律。中国の法律は大まかなガイドラインが定められており、その後に発表される「細則」で、罰則など具体的適応が定められ、施行の運びになることが一般的だ。
同条例では、いわゆる「口パク」を「偽唱」、「偽演奏」と呼び、「出演者がステージに出ていながら、（実際に会場に流す音楽には）事前に録音した歌唱や演奏を用いて、聴衆をだます行為」と定義した。
これまでのところ、修正後の条例では、「口パク」行為が発覚した場合、主催団体、出演団体、出演者の実名を公表し、2年以内に同様の行為があった場合には、出演者を含め「営業許可」を取り消すことが盛り込まれている。今回、意見を募集する細則では、それ以外の具体的処罰法が定められるとみられる。
「条例」はその他にも、「チャリティー」として実施する公演では、必要経費を除いた収益のすべてを公益事業のために寄付し、出演者も報酬を得てはならないことを定めている。
なお、同条例と細則の適用対象は商業目的の公演で、五輪大会開会式など公的行事は対象外となる。

日本橋三越で “エコツリー” 点灯、
同店では10年ぶりの灯火
老舗百貨店の東京・日本橋三越本店は1日（土）、“グリーン電力”と消費電力の少ない発光ダイオード（LED）を使用した、 高さ15m の“環境配慮型クリスマスツリー”の点灯式を行った。同店でクリスマスツリーを飾るのは10年ぶりのこと。点灯式には斉藤鉄夫環境大臣、小池百合子議員、中央区観光大使に任命されている“ミス中央”の3人らが出席。また、着物姿の女性たちによる琴演奏、ハンドベル演奏などもあり、3連休初日の同店を盛り上げた。
同店の創業335周年を記念して復活させた同ツリーは、環境省が実施している温暖化防止キャンペーン「チーム・マイナス6％」の参同団体「ECOEDO 日本橋実行委員会」の協力により実現。2万個のLEDは大陽光発電で点灯するほか、ツリー本体も使い回しができる金属製を使用し、環境に配慮しているという。
また、「ECOEDO日本橋実行委員会」は12月25日まで温暖化防止キャンペーンを実施。同店をはじめ5店舗で、電力の一部を、自然エネルギーを利用したグリーン電力でまかない、“環境に優しい電力”をアピールしていく。【11月1日15時11分配信】

薄く、軽く、アルミになった新しい「MacBook」が登場
【10月15日6時54分配信 ＋D PC USER】アップルは10月15日、13.3型ワイド液晶を搭載した「MacBook」の新モデルを発表した。
 ラインアップは従来と同様の3モデル構成だが、上位2モデルがアルミ筐体のまったく新しいデザインに生まれ変わり、最下位モデルのみ旧モデルを引き継ぐポリカーボネート素材のボディを採用している。なお、この変更にあわせて黒い外装のモデル（いわゆる“MacBook KURO”）は姿を消した。
今回のモデルチェンジは見どころが多い。まず、目を引くのがボディデザインだ。MacBookの外装は、MacBook Airの製造方法と同じように、1枚のアルミ板から削り出したものになった（これは同日発表された最新MacBook Proにも採用されている製法でMacBookは一回り小さい）。ボディサイズは325（幅）×227（奥行き）×24.1（高さ）ミリ、重量が2.04 キロと、従来モデルに比べて3.4ミリほど薄くなり、約230グラム軽くなっている。[つづき]

When the Beijing Olympics began on August 8, 2008 at 8:00 p.m — 8 being an auspicious number in Chinese — with a brilliant orgy of 35,000 fireworks and the thunderous percussion of 2,000 ancient drums, there was no question that the East now mattered. Asia has hosted the Summer Games twice before — Tokyo '64 and Seoul '88 — but this Olympics represents the aspirations of one-fifth of humanity. For 60 minutes, more than 15,000 Chinese performers marched and twirled and beamed with such flawless precision that it was as if the previous five millennia of Chinese history were merely a dress rehearsal for this moment.  If outsiders had to describe Hong Kong's film scene, they might use words like prolific, thinking of the seemingly endless kung-fu films that the city's studios have churned out. Or, if they knew their art-house fare, they could call it sophisticated, with a nod to the international acclaim that such exquisitely shot films as Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love (2000) have won in recent years. But, in fact, what was once one of the world's busiest film industries has been in financial and creative decline for some time. With just 50 homegrown movies hitting the city's cinemas, last year's output was a dismal shadow of the annual 200-plus figures of the early 1990s and a deeply worrying development for an industry whose output has been enjoyed by millions and inspired directors from Quentin Tarantino to Martin Scorsese. 総務省・情報通信政策研究所がこのほど発表した国内のブログに関する調査によると、今年1月現在、ネット上で公開されている国内ブログの総数は1690万で、1カ月に1回以上記事が更新されているアクティブなブログはそのうち約300万と、約18％に過ぎなかった。
調査は、国内の20のブログサイト・ブログ検索サイトを対象に記事のクローリングなどで実施。15歳以上のブログ開設経験者に対して2月15日から18日にかけてアンケート調査も行い、2351件の回答を得た。
アクティブブログは04年〜05年にかけて急増したが、その後は約300万で横ばいが続いている。現在、1カ月間に開設されているブログ数は40〜50万。2001年1月以降に開設されたブログの総計（削除済みのものを含む）は累計で約2240万だった。
毎月の新規書き込み記事数は04年から05年にかけ急増。その後はやや減少傾向で、近年は4000万から5000万程度だ。
国内ブログの記事総数は13億5000万件、データ総量は約42Tバイト（うちテキストは約12Tバイト）。ブログの総データ量は、記事数や画像、動画の増加に伴い、毎月1.6Tバイト前後増えている。
アンケートから抽出したブログの開設動機は、自己表現（30.9％）、コミュニニケーション（25.7％）、自分の情報を整理・蓄積するアーカイブ（25.0％）、収益（10.1％）、社会貢献（8.4％）の順で多かった。
スパムブログの内容は、多い順に販売誘導系（38.3％）、アフィリエイト収入目的（17.1％）、アダルト・出会い系（7.0％）。

7月4日、中国と台湾を結ぶ「週末直行便」がついに就航。記念となるその便に、人気歌手の周華健（エミール・チョウ）が搭乗する。
 エミールは4日朝に北京で中国海南航空の便に乗り、午後には台北に到着する予定。「直行便の運行は台湾芸能界にとって、喜ばしいこと。時間が節約でき、台湾と中国を自由に往復できる」と興奮気味に語った。
最近は中国での活動が多いエミールだが、5日には台湾の音楽賞・金曲奨に出席。李宗盛（ジョナサン・リー）、羅大佑（ルオ・ダーヨウ）とステージに立ち、 “台湾音楽界を代表するベテランアーティスト” として歌を披露する。また若手女性歌手のファンウェイチーの新曲「如果ニイ是我」の製作を手がけ、MV共演も果たしている。「子供の頃からのアイドルと共演できて嬉しいです！」と嬉しそうに語ったウェイチー。「彼女からの電話を受けた時、司会をしている『模範棒棒堂』への出演を誘われるのかと思ったよ」と笑わせていた。(編集担当：饒波貴子・黄珮君)

Airlines in China, Taiwan Forge Deal
New Cooperation Adds Direct Charter Flights;
Costs Still a Challenge
GUANGZHOU — China Southern Airlines Co. and Taiwan's China Airlines Ltd. signed an agreement to cooperate in launching direct charter flights between mainland China and the island of Taiwan. The memorandum of understanding comes after China and Taiwan signed an historic agreement June 13 that allows regular air links. Under the pact, China and Taiwan can operate 18 round-trip charter flights on weekends, from Friday to Monday, with services due to start July 4. The charter flights must still pass through Hong Kong's airspace, which China Southern Chairman Liu Shaoyang said is a "big pity" for passengers, as it increases their costs, particularly with oil prices near records. It also increases travel time and takes a bigger toll on the environment. — Continued

Who Will Rule The New Internet?

Apple, Google and Facebook are, respectively, an icon from the pioneering days of personal computers; the biggest, most profitable company yet born on the Web; and a feisty upstart whose name is synonymous with the current migration to social networks.
In many ways, these companies are technology's standard-bearers, though their guiding philosophies differ. Google, for instance, advocates an "open" Web and tends to push for open standards and alliances among developers. Facebook, with its gated community of 70 million active users, offers a more controlled experience and, so far at least, wants to keep its users safely within its walls. Apple comes from the old world. Its elegant products cocoon customers from the chaos of the information age, but the Apple experience tends to be highly controlled, with Apple hardware at the end points and Apple software and services, like the iTunes Music Store, in between.
The winners of the platform wars stand to make billions selling devices, selling eyeballs to advertisers, selling services such as music, movies, even computer power on demand. Yet the outcome here is far more important than who makes the most money. The future of the Internet — how we get information, how we communicate with one another and, most important, who controls it — is at stake. [Continued]

China doffs cap over Japan aid
Beijing's acceptance of Tokyo's help has implications beyond quake-aid efforts
The main reason behind China's apparently belated acceptance of Japan's offer to send emergency relief workers to an area hit by Monday's powerful earthquake seems to be an acknowledgement by Beijing of this country's accumulated experience in such matters. Though the Japanese government presented the offer to Beijing soon after the earthquake occurred Monday, the Chinese government did not immediately take up the offer. On Thursday, however, Beijing unexpectedly chose Japan as the first country from which to accept foreign rescue teams. Senior Vice Foreign Minister Itsunori Onodera said: "Japan has abundant experience in dealing with natural disasters. [A recent improvement in] Japan-China relations also is a factor." At the Prime Minister's Office on Thursday, Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda told reporters about the challenges facing the rescue teams: "It'll take time to grasp the circumstances [in the quake-stricken area]. It was unavoidable [that the request from China was delayed]. Japan will do everything it can," he said. — Continued

 LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "The Forbidden Kingdom," a first collaboration between action heroes Jackie Chan and Jet Li, kicked its rivals at the weekend box office in North America, also becoming the first martial arts movie to open at No. 1 in almost four years. According to studio estimates issued Sunday, "The Forbidden Kingdom" sold $20.9 million worth of tickets during its first three days, handily exceeding industry forecasts. Chan and Li play mentors to a modern-day kung fu devotee (played by Michael Angarano) who has been hurled back in time to rural China. It was directed by Rob Minkoff, best known for making the "Stuart Little" family movies. Most critics seemed to like it. [ Continued ]
