上中: 翌日の夜に開かれるエトナの社員のための華健のコンサートの前に、『有故事的人』を念には念を入れてリハーサルするキーボード担当の 「新入りさん」。 上右: 写真を撮っていない時はキーボードを弾いているらしい ─ 言い方が逆だったかしら.... (笑)

It actually took me a couple of years to find out this one's name. I'd seen him in the band for the first time in 2001, when the J-club was allowed into Wakin's rehearsal in Yokohama for a corporate event. The unfamiliar face playing the synthesizers was "the new guy," Wakin said, "and he's working out pretty good." In 2002, at the April 9th Hong Kong concert, I was so amused to discover through my own camera lens that this same person was shooting photos of Wakin when he wasn't playing his keyboard — his bandmate Lee Chi seemed to get a kick out of him too! I eagerly asked around so that I could use his name in my Hong Kong concert report, but I still could not find out. So, by the time of the March 2003 Kuala Lumpur concert, I really really had my ears peeled for the band members' intros. Then they began: "Ah Jiao!..... Ah Khuang!..... Ah Yao!..... Mao Juan!..... Lee Chi!..... Ah Hu!...... Jian Qi!..... Xiao Hai!...... Xiao Wei!....." And I was on the edge of my seat, ears at the ready: "2E!"

That's how it sounded to me in a big stadium filled to bursting with a noisy crowd — ho ho!  Lee Chi later took pity on the poor foreigner and told me that his bandmate's name is TU YIN 屠穎, but he also goes by Max.

私がこの人の名前を見つけるのに、なんと2年もかかりました。彼を初めて見たのは2001年、華健が企業イベントのために横浜でやったリハーサルをJクラブが見せてもらった時、そこのバンドにいたんです。シンセサイザーを担当していたこの見慣れない人を華健は「うちの新入りだよ。結構イケてるんだ」って紹介してくれました。2002年4月9日の香港コンサートではすごく面白いことを発見しました。カメラを覗いてたら、この同じ人がキーボードを弾いてない時に華健の写真を撮ってたの！（彼のバンド仲間のリー・チも彼のことを面白がってたみたい〜）私の香港コンサート・レポートで彼の名前を使おうと思って必死に聞いて回ったんだけど、ダメだった。

で、2003年3月のクアラルンプール・コンサートでは、バンドメンバーの紹介の時に私はマジで耳をダンボにしてました。「アー・ジアオ！..... アー・クアン！..... アー・ヤオ！..... マオ・ジュアン！.....リー・チ！..... アー・フ！..... ジアン・チ！..... シャオ・ハイ！..... シャオ・ウェイ！.....」って紹介されてきたので、私はもう「さあ来い」って感じで椅子から身を乗り出さんばかりにしてたら、「2E!」

「はぁ?!?」 そういう風に聞こえたのよ、だって大スタジアムの中は割れんばかりの大歓声なんだもの〜オホホ！後でこの哀れな外人を可哀想に思ったリー・チーさんが教えてくれたところでは、同僚の本名は トゥ・イン 屠穎、通称マックスだって。

The Easy Band and Hard Band members happily work for this man, EMIL CHAU WAKIN 周華健, who is shown here in rehearsal for his 29 March 2003 concert in KUALA LUMPUR.  It was quite an event! The crowd that filled the Putra Indoor Stadium was so enthusiastic and welcoming that Wakin seemed close to tears by his fourth song..... I'll remember that packed arena as the biggest and loudest-cheering crowd I'd ever experienced at a Wakin concert up to that time — the venue was even bigger than wonderful Singapore's, and the audience was just as wild about Wakin!イージー・バンドとハード・バンドのメンバーが、この人のためなら喜んで仕事をするっていうのが、周華健／エミール・チョウ。写真は2003年3月29日にクアラルンプールで 行われたコンサートのリハーサルをしてるところ。あれはすごいコンサートだった！ プトラ屋内競技場に詰めかけた観客があんまり熱狂的に歓迎するので、華健も4曲目ぐらいで目がウルウルしてたみたい..... あの満杯のアリーナは、観客の数からいっても歓声の大きさからいっても、私がそれまでに経験した華健のコンサートの中で一番すごかった— 会場も素晴らしいシンガポールの時より大きかったし、観客はただもう華健に夢中！　

 As many know by now, Wakin was preparing to start the second round of what he called his taishu-karaoke (mass sing-along) of The Flowery Heart, originally a Japanese song titled "Hana," when he stepped back and fell into a hole. The audience, in which Wakin's wife Constance also was seated, gave a collective, stadium-resonating *GASP!* at what they'd just witnessed. Oh no! From "The Flowery Heart" to "The Flowery Hurt"?!? The Taiwan-Singapore-Japan Baiyou group wasted no time in starting up a hopeful chant directed toward the empty space onstage: "Hua-Jian, jia you! Hua-Jian, jia you! Hua-Jian, jia you! (Wakin, hang in there! .....)" Some muffled fumbling and mumbling and the ominous sounds of a guitar in distress — *bonk-bang-bing-boing* — could be heard over the stadium speaker system..... then Wakin's head and shoulders suddenly reappeared, and he clambered out of the hole, laughing that familiar "Hya-hya-hya!" Except for a little dust here and there, he seemed to be no worse for wear. After some words of apology and jolly assurance, he carried on with The Flowery Heart without his black guitar — it had not survived the fall — pausing at each side of the stage for a moment to bow long and deeply to a relieved, applauding audience.

 もうみんなも知ってるように、華健が日本の『花』を中国語でカバーしたThe Flowery Heart / 花心を、1番に続いて2番も彼の言う「大衆カラオケ」で会場のお客さんと一緒に歌おうとして後ろに下がったら、穴に落ちてしまいました。客席から、その中には華健の奥さんのコンスタンスもいたんだけど、たったいま自分たちの目の前で起きたことに、会場中に響き渡る「アーッ！」っていう声が一斉に上がった後、静まり返りました。"オーノー！「花の心」が「穴のところ」へ？!?" 台湾とシンガポールと日本のバイヨウ・グループはすぐに、誰もいないステージに向かってエールを送りました：「華健、加油！華健、加油！華健、加油！」（華健、がんばれ！....）ってね。そしたら会場のスピーカーから、「ガラガッチャガッチャ」、「ドテッ、ポキッ、グシャッ」、「ムギュウ」なんていう音と、痛々しいギターの音が陰にこもってものすごく「ボロ〜ン、ビロ〜ン、ベロ〜ン」と聞こえて..... それから華健の頭と肩が現れて、穴から上がってきました。「みんなありがとう、ヒャ・ヒャ・ヒャ！」 って笑いながら。あちこちにほこりが付いてた以外は、別に何ともなかったみたい。ちょっと謝って無事を告げた後、『花心』を黒のギターなしで続け—落ちた時に壊れたんだって—ステージの各辺でしばらく立ち止まっては、ほっとして拍手を送る観客に深々と頭を下げて応えました。

It was very fitting that the Japan Baiyous' chance to present their rose bouquet to Wakin directly followed The Flowery Heart — though in the Japanese tradition we stoically kept our composure about his tumble..... until now.....実にうまい具合に、『花心』が終わった時、日本のバイヨウはバラの花束を華健に直接プレゼントすることができました。 日本の伝統を守って、彼のアクシデントにも取り乱したりはしなかったよ、今まではね（笑).....

ワーキン サン、ニホン ノ ウタ ヲ アキラメナイデ!!! WAKIN-SAN, PLEASE DON'T GIVE UP ON THE JAPANESE SONGS!!!

Pianist HONG JING YAO 洪敬堯, who also goes by the name Eric, tends to be called Ah Yao by his friends and fans. I first saw him perform live in the band with Wakin at Jackie Chan's Las Vegas charity concert in 2000. The gal I was with at that concert was a real Ah Yao fan ~ She even sprinted off to follow him up the escalator when he came out of the MGM Grand Garden Arena's side doors after the show (Ehhh....? Hadn't we been hoping to spot Wakin?!!), but she lost sight of him in the crowd — heh heh! It was from her that I'd heard repeatedly about Ah Yao's solo album titled Sleepless Bible. So I became determined to find it. Not an easy task — it's likely out of print. But success finally came in April of 2003, thanks to the Singapore Baiyou — domo arigatou ne! 

On the right side below is guitarist LEE TING KHUANG 李庭匡, and though his nick is Barry I hear him called Ah Khuang more often than not. His great guitar work really stood out for me on the Emil's Live Alive Hong Kong concert VCD.

As you can see here, he has an air of nonchalance about him — he can play hard for a few hours straight and not even break a sweat! I was finally able to see and hear him and Wakin zoom through that spicy Cantonese "New Everlasting Love," one of my all-time favorite songs of any artist, live at the Hong Kong Coliseum on April 9, 2002. Excelente!

ピアニストのホン・ジン・ヤオ 洪敬堯（左）は通称エリック。でも友達やファンからはアー・ヤオって呼ばれてる。私が彼を最初に見たのは、ジャッキー・チェンの2000年ラスベガス・チャリティーコンサートで華健のバンドでライブをやった時でした。私がそのコンサートで一緒だった女の子は本物のアー・ヤオ・ファンで、MGMグランドガーデン・アリーナのサイドドアから彼が出て来たら、すっ飛んで後を追ってった（エー？ 私たち、華健 を見つけようとしてたんじゃなかったっけ？)。でも、人込みの中で見失っちゃった 〜 ハハ！彼女から『失眼聖経 (Sleepless Bible)』というアー・ヤオのソロアルバムのことを何度も聞かされてたから絶対見つけるつもりでいたんだけど、楽じゃなかった ─ 廃盤になってたみたい。 でも、2003年4月についに発見、シンガポール・バイヨウのお陰で ─ ドーモ　アリガトウ　ネ！

I became aware of Taiwan's veteran bassist GUO ZONG SHAO 郭宗韶 when I bought the Xiao Tian Tang / My Little Paradise CD. But I admit that I don't know how to properly pronounce his name..... I'm lucky that he also answers to Ah Jiao 啊嬌.

Even though I'm trying to study pinyin and Chinese, progress is slow and out of habit I continue to read Chinese names with Japanese or English tones (I know it's sloppy of me to see the above as "goo-oh" like I keep doing....Haha!). I rarely get the chance to hear these names spoken, so when a name is told to me directly, I might not recognize it. But I've enjoyed and admired Ah Jiao's distinctive contributions to Wakin's and other artists' music for a number of years already! I've come to realize that he also plays an important production role behind the scenes, as shown in the credits of such CDs as NOW / Xian Zai (2000), for example. Wakin spoke so highly of him in his online diary too....

And there is a 2001 article and interview in English titled Taiwan's Bass Ace stored in the Globalbass.com archives that goes into wonderful detail about the background and ability of this great musician. I always look forward to seeing Ah Jiao in broadcasts and at concerts!

私が台湾のベテランベーシスト、グォ・ゾン・シャオ 郭宗韶 の存在に気付いたのは、『小天堂 (My Little Paradise)』のCDを買った時でした。でもね、正直言ってこの人の名前、何て発音するのかわからない.....

アー・ジァオ (啊嬌) というニックネームがあるから助かりま〜す。

私、中国語とピンインを勉強してるんだけど、なかなか進歩しなくて。それに中国人の名前をつい日本語か英語風に読んでしまう (上の名前をいつもやってるみたいに「グーオー」って読むのは、いくらなんでもいい加減ですね＜笑＞)。こういう名前ってめったに聞かないから、直接言われてもたぶんわからないんじゃないかな。でも、アー・ジァオが華健とかほかのアーチストの音楽に何年も彼なりの貢献をしてきたことは、私も楽しませてもらってるし、素晴らしいって思ってる。例えば、『NOW / 現在 (2000年)』などのCDクレジットに見られるように、彼は舞台裏でも製作の重要な役割を果たしていることがわかります。華健も彼のことを自分のオンライン日記で激賞してます....

それと、Globalbass.comのアーカイブに "Taiwan's Bass Ace"っていうタイトルで2001年の英語の記事とインタビューが保存されていて、このスーパー・ミュージシャンのバックグラウンドとか才能のことなんかがとても詳しく書かれてます。テレビやコンサートでアー・ジァオに会えるのをいつも期待してる私です。

Here, Wakin is rehearsing for his KL concert with the bassist XIAO HAI 小海 (right and below left) and guitarist XIAO HU 小虎 (below center). The guys of the Hard Band appeared onstage around 2000 or so as part of Wakin's refreshing exploration of a more rock-oriented style for some songs on the Day Lilies album. The Easy Band members, who have performed at Wakin's concerts for much longer, convey the ballad style of Wakin's well-loved repertoire featured on such classic albums as Emil & Friends.

Members of each band together back him at concerts; I haven't seen them perform as completely separate units. As I understand it, the individuals of both bands have close working relationships with Wakin but are free to take gigs with other artists. Many times I've seen the different members backing various singers on TV shows and in concerts of other major performers such as Ah Mei, Faye Wong, Chyi Yu, Victor Wong, Fish Leong, and Harlem Yu. Certain individuals are often featured on signature hits of Wakin's during his live concerts, such as Lee Chi, the Easy Band's "Blue Violinist," on "A Man with a Story," and the Hard Band's Xiao Hu on "What's Going On?" from Wang You Cao / Day Lilies. But unlike the members of a conventional band — "Emil & the Chaus"? Haha! — some of the familiar guys may not necessarily be playing at certain performances of Wakin's. I assume it depends on their scheduled commitments.

I was watching a Mainland concert broadcasted on TV once, and most all of the band members backing Wakin were unfamiliar faces. But they were really smooth on each of the songs, and the electric-guitar riffs for "What's Going On?" were as fine as ever! << Though to me they'll always be Xiao Hu's riffs that I'd heard at the O2 . . . .

上は華健がベースの シャオ・ハイ 小海 (右上) とギターの シャオ・フー 小虎 (左上) とKLコンサートのリハーサルをしてるところ。この2人はハード・バンドのメンバーで、2000年頃、華健が新しくロックっぽいスタイルを試していた頃にステージに、アルバム『 忘れな草 (Day Lilies)』の中の何曲かで演奏してる。華健のコンサートでもっと前から演奏してるイージー・バンドのメンバーは、『朋友 (Friends)』のような傑作アルバムにフィーチャーされている華健の代表曲をバラード風に演奏してる。コンサートではそれぞれのバンドのメンバーが一緒に華健のバックを務めるんだけど、全く別のユニットとして演奏するところは、まだ見たことがない。どっちのバンドのメンバーも華健の専属みたいな形で仕事をしてるけど、ほかのアーチストと仕事をしても別に構わないんだって、私は理解してる。違うメンバーがテレビでいろんな歌手のバックを務めたり、 アーメイとか フェイ・ウォン、齊豫、 ビクター・ウォン、フィッシュ・レオン、それに ハーレム・ユー　なんていう大物アーチストのコンサートでバックを務めるのを何度も見てるから。華健がライブコンサートで大ヒット曲を歌う時に特定のミュージシャンがフィーチャーされることはよくあるみたい。例えば 『有故事的人 (A Man with a Story)』ではイージー・バンドの「ブルー・バイオリニスト」、リー・チとか、忘れな草 の『どうしたんだ？』では

とかね。でも、レギュラー・バンド ─ 「周華健とそのグループ」？（笑）─ のメンバーじゃないんだけど華健のコンサートでよく見かける人が、コンサートによっては必ずしも演奏してないことがある。たぶんスケジュールが合わなかったのでしょう。一度、中国でのコンサートをテレビで見たことがあるけど、華健のバックバンドのメンバーはほとんど知らない顔だった。でも、お馴染みの曲はどれもイケてたし、どうしたんだ？のギターのリフなんて最高！ （だけど、やっぱり私には O2慈善演唱會で生で聞いた シャオ・フーのリフが一番）

I'd first gotten a good look at Ah Zhou — but even Wakin calls him Luo Papa [羅芭芭]！— and Ah Wen in 2002, on the afternoon of 20 January during the preps for Wakin's "O2: Take a Deep Breath" charity concert in Taipei.

The Day Lilies CD had not been out for long, and the musical styles of the album were still very new and fresh for me. I have such a clear memory of that winter day, standing near the foot of the stage, watching them at the concert rehearsal, bundled in their warm clothing against the chill indoors..... They were lined up with their headphones on, and they filled that entire gymnasium with beautiful harmonies flowing effortlessly around Wakin's vocals. Since then, whenever I listen to such songs as "You Mei You Yi Shou Ge Hui Rang Ni Yue Qi Wo (Any Song Reminds You of Me?)" and "1234567," I find myself singing those same harmonies that I had first learned from them. (I'm sorry, however, to have been a bit tardy in recognizing them without their headphones and mikes.....!)

Here, LUO PAPA shares a shot with another veteran bassist (formerly a pupil of Ah Jiao's), LIAUW SHI ZHENG 廖世錚. I'd first had the luxury to observe him live at a rehearsal in Yokohama, Japan, at the end of May in 2001. What a treat that was! Ever wonder why a person like me would even notice the folks who work at the rear to support The Main Attraction? The answer is easy: When I listen to Wakin's music, I listen. Though I don't understand the Chinese lyrics quite yet, for me it's simple and satisfying to focus on and enjoy the vocal power, the melodies, the harmonies, the rhythms, the creativity — there's still a lot to appreciate even for the linguistically challenged. A phenomenon similar to scat singing might be in play here..... There are rarely any real words in scat, which is a jazz-singing style popularized by such legends as Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. The vocals of scat singing are rapid, wide-ranging, random syllables whose rhythms and scales soar up, down and around the sounds of the bass, the sax, the piano, the guitar, the drums and percussion — all together rather expertly weaving a central melody. But scat singing has no real lyrics, no true meanings. The audience appreciates the spirit and the skill of scat, not the significance of what's being sung.

I think my way of approaching Chinese pop right now is something like that. Besides, some of the best artists like Wakin have put out all-English albums, and there are many songs that contain at least a little English....

上の写真でルオ・パパと一緒に写ってるのはもう一人のベテランベーシスト (アー・ジァオ先生の元生徒)、リャオ・シー・チェン 廖世錚。私が初めて彼を生で見るというぜいたくを味わったのは、 2001年の5月末に横浜で行われたリハーサル(下)でのこと。何という喜び！ 主役を支える裏方さんに何で私なんかが気付いたのって思わない？ 答は簡単：華健の音楽を聞く時は耳を澄ませてるの。中国語の歌詞は全然わからないけど、ボーカルのパワーとかメロディー、ハーモニー、リズム、独創性なんかに集中して楽しむのは簡単だし、十分満足できる─言葉の問題は有っても私にだってわかることはまだたくさんあるんだから。「スキャット」に似た現象がここでは起きてるのかもね..... スキャットはルイ・アームストロングやエラ・フィッツジェラルドみたいな伝説的シンガーが広めたジャズの歌唱法の1つなんだけど、まともな言葉で歌うことはめったにない。スキャットの歌い方は速くて音域が広く、でたらめな子音のリズムと音階を上げたり下げたりして、そこにベースやサックス、ピアノ、ギター、ドラム、パーカッションの音が絡む─そのすべてが一体となって中心のメロディーを巧みに織り上げるわけ。だけどスキャットには本来の歌詞がないし、ちゃんとした意味もない。聞く人はスキャットの心と技術を味わうの、歌われてることの意味じゃなくね。いま私がやってるチャイニーズ・ポップスへの私なりのアプローチも、何かそんなようなものだと思う。まあ、華健のCDもそうだし、ほかのアーチストのCDもそうなんだけど、時には英語がちょこっと混じってることもあるし、それに言うまでもないことだけど、全部が英語のアルバムだってないわけじゃないしね.....
