So what has Emil Chau, 40, been up to these days? Cruising along in a lower gear and leading a less public life.

Sounding relaxed in a phone interview from Taiwan, the singer-songwriter said he has "regained his soul" as his latest album, produced by Jonathan Lee, is taking longer than expected.

"I didn't like my previous lifestyle of releasing albums non-stop. I had to rush to events, press conferences. I never had the chance to stop and rest."

To him, life in an urban city can be a pressure cooker.

"I couldn't sleep at night because my brain was still active. For six to seven years, I would wake up three or four times and record a tune with a tape recorder."

Now, not only has his insomnia disappeared, he has finally got time with his two kids, Andrew, 10, and Anya, 5.

With his signature laugh, Emil said: "Now, I get to wake up at 1 or 2 p.m. I've more time to spend at home now. My children have grown up. Last time, I couldn't keep track of how big they had grown.

"The other day, my elder son and I actually discussed in detail a documentary he saw about the birth of a worm."

Emil also admitted that churning out ballads non-stop is no longer his cup of tea.

He's now putting his creative juices to writing short stories which are being featured on a fan's website [Note: Select "KINternet" from the menu to access]. He also plans to go into making movies.
