Up Where He Belongs

What got Emil Chau weak in the knees when he sang to the President?

Chatty Emil Chau could hardly talk when he got off the stage at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Wednesday night.

"My legs are still feeling a little weak. I couldn't stand properly when I got off stage just now," he told the crowd, before breaking into his famous guffaws.

SGP Pres. Nathan"I must go home and tell my son that daddy did a great thing today."

The popular Taiwanese singer was raised to a height of five metres on a hydraulic stage while he belted out the first lines of Stand Up For Singapore, which he dedicated to President Nathan and Mrs. Nathan, who attended Comfort's 30th Anniversary Superstar Concert on Wednesday night.

The fun-loving singer appeared scared. Or so he claimed. On stage he told Mr. Nathan: "Mr. President, I am proud, but I am scared too."

Still, he delivered some of his best-known hits to the delight of his many middle-aged female fans, who waved and clapped along with the likes of Friends and Love Follows Us.

The concert organiser, Ideaholic, said Emil agreed to being elevated to that height.

"But he has never done it before," said the spokesman. "Yes, he was covered by insurance."

Maria CorderoIn fact, the almost full-house crowd enjoyed itself very much with oldies by local artists Fann Wong and Tay Ping Hui, and foreign stars such as Grasshoppers, Andy Hui, William So, and Maria Cordero.

The latter won much applause and wild whistles from the fans -- more so than pop idols Fann Wong or Andy Hui -- with her hip gyrating antics aka Coco Lee. "Do you think I have a good figure?" she teased, strutting on stage.

The crowd cheered. "Yes, I feel so too. I have all that I need (meaning her physical assets), and I even have those that I don't (meaning the fat)," said Maria.

Now these are the artists we really need -- celebrities who know how to tease and laugh at themselves, with us!
